A family business born in the Granite City committed to sourcing ethically sustainable raw material and supplying the very best quality, best value products possible.
Founded in 1878 by Joseph Robertson, the company proudly boasts a fourth generation of family ownership totally committed to the ideals of producing the very best quality, best value products possible. Located in the heart of the Aberdeen fishing community, Joseph Robertson has one of the most modern fish manufacturing sites in the UK.
The company specialises in secondary food processing, and is one of the largest independent value added seafood manufacturers in the UK. We supply a range of products to major retailers across the UK, manufacturing for the retailers’ own label brands. In addition, the company also has product ranges through its own ‘Swankies’ and ‘Get Hooked’ brands. Core product lines include coated fillets, traditional fishcakes and melting centre fishcakes.
Joseph Robertson founded the company in 1878 in Aberdeen, entering the fish trade as a fish merchant and primary processor, supplying fish from the Aberdeen Market to local establishments in the North East of Scotland. Up until 1991 the business continued to operate as a primary fish processor sending fish throughout the UK and also parts of Europe.
With the primary fish processing sector in decline, the business diversified into value-added produce and became a secondary processor. The business continued to grow and moved into a purpose built facility in 1991. Further growth throughout this period, derived primarily from supplying frozen fish products to the foodservice sector then led to a move to the current premises on Sinclair Road, Torry in 1999.
In December 2005 the company suffered a devastating fire which completely destroyed the factory on Sinclair Road. The company managed to survive the disaster as a new state of the art £8.4m factory was designed and built in under 14 months. The new facility was officially opened by HRH the Duke of York in May 2007.
From 2008 onwards the business has strategically evolved over the years, from being primarily a producer of frozen fish fillets for the foodservice sector, into one of the largest chilled fish producers for the UK retail market. Innovation and R&D have been core to the company’s success allowing it to compete effectively within the market.
